Oral Cancer Screening

We already know that oral health is imperative to good overall health. Additionally, oral cancer screening is imperative to overall health. Our experienced dentists perform oral cancer screening for patients to check for signs of oral cancer in a patient’s mouth as early as possible. The earlier we find the presence of oral cancer, the faster we can treat it and you can move on from your diagnosis. At Vestal Dental, we want to find cancerous cells as quickly as possible when they are still easy to remove and long before they’ve had a chance to spread and cause other health issues in the process.

While oral cancer is not a problem for everyone, we like to catch it as early as possible to ensure that you receive the most comprehensive care. Our dental professionals especially recommend a screening if you are one of the people with a greater risk of developing oral cancer. The faster we find it, the faster we can begin treatment to get you back to good health as soon as possible.

Who Is At Risk for Oral Cancer?

Not everyone develops oral cancer of any kind throughout life. However, there are some people far more likely to develop this form of cancer than others. It’s not a guarantee that if you can say yes to one or more of the risk factors in your own life that oral cancer will be a problem for you in the future, but it does help to know so you can make an informed decision when it comes to screening.

  •   History of sun exposure (significant sun exposure, such as those who work outdoors)
  •   Tobacco use, including cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, pipes, snuff and more
  •   Previous oral cancer
  •   Heavy alcohol consumption

It’s scary to learn that you might be at a higher risk for an oral cancer diagnosis than others, but it’s good to know this in advance. Our team wants to ensure that your health is always in tip-top shape, and that means knowing which of our patients are at risk for a potential oral cancer diagnosis.

Symptoms of Oral Cancer

Keep in mind that many of the symptoms of oral cancer are also symptoms of other health issues in many cases. It’s imperative that you learn to recognize the symptoms of this issue so that you can bring it to the attention of our staff at Vestal. The health and safety of our patients is our first priority, and we do not feel that any question or concern regarding your oral health is too small or too silly.

We want our patients to come to us with issues, concerns or questions regarding oral health, especially as it pertains to oral cancer. That’s why we like our patients informed about the potential signs that oral cancer might be present so we can get to work identifying the problem in an effort to treat it right away.

  •   Sores that bleed very easily
  •   Sores that do not heal in the mouth
  •   A hard, crusty area in the mouth
  •   A rough area in the mouth
  •   Numbness
  •   Pain
  •   Tenderness
  •   A sudden difference in the way your teeth fit together when you bit down on something
  •   Problems or concerns chewing, swallowing, moving your tongue, moving your jaw, speaking

Each symptom by itself is not all that concerning. A rough area could be a sore you developed after biting the inside of your mouth repeatedly. Numbness or pain might be associated with recent dental work. Tenderness could be an infection or a tooth that needs to come out. Each of these signs could mean something entirely different, but none is good so please don’t hesitate to call our offices with your questions or concerns.
