October is when many Vestal households start looking at what is left on their dental benefits for the year. If you have been living with a missing tooth, or a tooth your dentist has been watching for some time, it is also a good moment to think about the calendar a little differently.
Dental implant treatment is not a single appointment. It unfolds in stages over several months, with healing time built in between each one. Starting in the fall means those stages can naturally fall across two benefit years, and across two years of flexible spending account contributions.
Vestal Dental Associates has been caring for families in the Greater Binghamton area since 1955. Here is how implant treatment is sequenced, why the timing matters, and what a fall consultation involves.
Every case is planned individually, but most single tooth and multi-tooth implant cases follow a similar sequence. Knowing the stages makes it easier to see where the calendar comes in.
From the first visit to the finished tooth, many patients are looking at somewhere between four months and a year, depending largely on whether grafting is needed. Our post on what to expect when getting dental implants from start to finish walks through each stage in more detail.
Most dental plans run on a calendar year, with an annual maximum that resets on January 1. Benefits left unused on December 31 do not carry forward. Flexible spending accounts usually work the same way, although some employers offer a short grace period or a limited carryover.
Because implant care is staged, the work does not all land in one plan year. A patient who has an extraction and graft in November, for example, may have the implant placed in the spring and the final crown completed later in 2027. Each phase is billed when it is performed, so earlier phases can use this year's benefits while later phases use next year's.
Coverage for implants varies widely from plan to plan. Some plans include implants, some cover certain parts of the process such as the extraction or the crown, and some exclude them. Reviewing your plan details before the year ends gives you the clearest picture of what is available to you.
Vestal Dental Associates is an independent, fee-for-service practice, and many of our patients still use their dental benefits here. Our article on what out-of-network dental insurance actually means explains how that works, and our payment options page covers the rest.
The first visit is about information, not commitment. Nothing moves forward until you understand your options and have agreed to a plan.
We begin with a thorough exam and 3D imaging on our Orthophos SL 3D system, which uses cone beam CT technology to show the jaw in three dimensions with less radiation than conventional cone beam units. That image shows bone height, width, and density, along with the location of nerves and sinuses.
Our digital implant planning software then lets the doctors place a virtual implant before treatment begins, checking its position from every angle. If the bone is thin, we will talk through whether bone grafting and socket preservation should come first, which is one of the biggest factors in the overall timeline.
If you are wondering whether implants are right for you at all, our guide to dental implant candidacy covers the factors we look at.
The timeline also depends on what is being replaced. A single tooth dental implant is the most straightforward case. Replacing several neighboring teeth may involve an implant-supported bridge. For patients replacing a full arch, All-on-4 dental implants and other full-arch designs follow their own sequence, which our doctors will lay out at the consultation.
Whatever the scope, your care is planned by doctors with advanced implant training working alongside our in-house prosthodontist, Dr. Fritz Zietsman, who designs the final teeth. You can read about their training on our meet our doctors page.
Starting implant treatment in the fall is not about rushing a decision. It simply gives you the most flexibility with benefits you have already paid for, while the healing stages carry the work comfortably into the new year.
Patients come to us from Vestal, Endicott, Owego, and across the Southern Tier, including many who travel from Binghamton for dental implant care.
