As we all know, there has been a sharp increase in environmental awareness or “eco-consciousness” in recent years.

It follows that practicing “green dentistry” can only help contribute to more sustainable resources and a healthier environment.

Our office has always strived to adopt environmentally friendly practices.  We feel it is our professional obligation and social responsibility to reduce our carbon footprint as much as possible.

Medical and dental waste has significantly added to environmental problems stemming from single use plastic products.  Much of this waste does not easily decompose.  Knowing this, we try to use biodegradable and compostable products and/or reusable products – thus reducing energy consumption.

Other areas where we support eco-friendly practices are:

  •   Purchasing supplies in bulk to reduce packaging and shipping waste.
  •   Implementing electronic health records and paperless systems.
  •   Utilizing digital radiographs and digital imagery to reduce chemicals associated with developing film.
  •   Switching to biodegradable products free of volatile organic compounds.
  •   Switching to LED lights to reduce energy consumption by up to 70%.
  •   Utilization of amalgam waste separation systems and disposal systems before this waste enters our water system.
  •   Recycling a number of dental items such as worn dental instruments and equipment.
  •   Biodegradable autoclave pouches and nitrile gloves.
  •   Ordering supplies and support services from local businesses.

Green dentistry is an eco-friendly approach that is kinder to our planet creating a caring environment for our patients and provides social value to our community.  Our hope is that the medical community will also adopt their models so we, together, can set the example for other businesses as well.
